Does Marijuana used during pregnancy pass to my baby?

Yes. If you smoke marijuana during pregnancy:

  • Marijuana passes through the placenta to the fetus. 85
  • Marijuana compounds can be found in the brains of 14 week-old fetuses.83
  • Children whose mothers smoked marijuana regularly during pregnancy have difficulty in school (behavioral and cognitive)83,85

Does Marijuana help pregnancy nausea?

  • It may seem to help, but there are safer, more effective choices.86
  • Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is temporary and is usually gone by week 14.
  • There are many home remedies like ginger or hard candies.
  • Vitamin B6 can be helpful.
  • There are other effective medications, safer than marijuana. Ask your provider for a prescription.

Is Marijuana safer than cigarettes?

  • Cigarette smoking is linked to many types of cancer. Marijuana is not associated with as many types of cancer as cigarettes, but is associated with preterm birth, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, stillbirth and small for gestational age babies. 83
  • Marijuana use during pregnancy affects the brain development of your baby, leading to behavioral and learning problems that become evident around age 6. 83
